1. Wine Tasting in the Gibbston Valley. This is just outside Queenstown. You can go on a wine tasting tour, which is a nice and easy way to get to see beautiful vineyards, taste local wines and don’t have to worry about driving. Note that group tastings are done indoors. If you have a car, you can drive yourself, go at your own pace, have a glass or two of wine outside while overlooking the property and grab a bite. I would recommend going on your own, sit outside, relax and enjoy the view.

2. Lupins. Go for a drive and immerse yourself in the beautiful lupins. They are everywhere! We came across them an hour before arriving at Milford Sound area.

3. Queenstown Bay Beach. Spend some time in town, soak in the sun and take a dip in the water. It was very cold but very refreshing! You can rent kayaks, paddle boards, go on a boat tour and many other activities. We walked around the town, grabbed breakfast at Bespoke Kitchen, which was delicious and hit the beach.

4. Take time to unplug and relax. We stayed at Millboork Resort and it was absolutely wonderful. The property has over 4 restaurants, a spa, indoor pool, hot pools, a golf course, laundry on site, which came in handy as we did a month-long honeymoon! We had a little cottage with a fantastic view, a private entry way, just the perfect way to ring in the new year. Book spa packages and make dinner reservations in advance as they book up pretty fast. This was our little treat from us to us.

5. Milford Sound. We decided to drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound, which was 3.5 hours. It was tough but we enjoyed the flexibility of going at our own pace and being able to stop to see the lupins and make breaks when we needed to. We stopped at Te Anau for breakfast and dinner. The best way to see Milford Sound is booking a cruise. We did a small one, which lasted one hour and forty-five minutes. We got close to seals, saw the Ffjords and amazing waterfalls. We got soaked when we got up-and-close to the biggest waterfall and saw a rainbow but it was so worth it.

6. Queenstown Gardens. While in town, take the time to walk around the Queenstown Gardens, so beautiful and a nice break from the sun or a well-deserved long walk after a day of wine tasting. The town was very lively at the end of December, live music on the streets, and anything you needed from stores, pharmacies, and tons of pretty lodges.
