What to do in Auckland in One Day
We landed on Thursday afternoon, checked into our hotel, went for a walk, and had a laid-back dinner. Everything is close by so you can easily find something. The next day, we took The Essence of Waiheke Wine Tour in Waiheke Island. We took the 10 AM ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island. Note that we booked the tour and ferries in advance, I recommend doing it at least one month out especially if you’re going in the summer, December through April, as the tours and ferries fill up quickly. The tour was about 5 hours, we went to 3 vineyards including Mudbrick, Goldie Estate and Obsidian.

We had 12 tastings and ended up having lunch at Three Seven Two right on Onetangui Beach with great views of the famous Pohutukawa, the New Zealand Christmas tree. The views from the first two vineyards were breathtaking, up on the mountains and overlooking the bay and the vineyards of course. After lunch you have the option of going back to take the 4PM ferry or the tour can drop you off in the town, where you can walk to Onero Beach, which is just lovely, and only a 20 min walk back to the ferry. The ferries run every hour so you can take your time at the beach and head back when you are ready.

Go to Devenport: For our second day, we didn’t have a set plan as we weren’t sure how jetlagged we were going to be and wanted to go at our own pace. We started our day having brunch to Chuffed, super cute spot with big plates in a hidden alley, it was delicious. Then we took a ferry to Devonport, a harborside suburb, just a 10 min ride from Auckland. It’s a super cute village and easy day trip from Auckland. We started by walking around town, checking out the local stores and restaurants to scout out where we wanted to eat later.

Go to Cheltenham Beach: Then, we hiked Mount Victoria to see the whole island from above. It took about 15 minutes; the sun was shining so we laid down in the sun for a bit. Then we walked to Cheltenham Beach for a little down time, while admiring all the beautiful Victorian houses along the way. You could walk in the water for 10 minutes and the water was still below your knee, great for families and to relax. On our way back to the ferry terminal, we stopped by Devon On The Wharf for a bite and ice cream.
