There are over 100 wineries in the Marlborough region in the South Island of New Zealand. Marlborough is mostly known for their wonderful Sauvignon Blancs and the fact that you can go wine tasting year around and still wear a dress, sometimes you may need a jacket but its wine tasting central, and I loved the experience driving through the region and tasting some of the world famous Sauvignon Blancs at places like Cloudy Bay and others I stopped by during our honeymoon. We stayed in Nelson, where Tahunanui Beach is and drove about 1.5 hours to Marlborough.
For more on Tahunanui Beach and what to do in the area, check out my tips here. We started our Marlbourough wine tasting journey at Cloudy Bay and did the Cloudy Bay Indulge tasting, which included the Pelorus Rose (sparkling), Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Mustang Pinot Noir 2013 (Marlborough) and Te Wahi Pinot Noir 2019 (Central Otago). They were all great and the tasting masters were dressed in super cute matching green A-line skirts, beige sweater and a Cloudy Bay printer green, beige silk scarf that was very chic, very Audrey Hepburn-esque.
The property is lovely, they have swings in the yard hanging from trees and overlooking the vines. You should book in advance to make sure you get a spot. We were lucky we got a spot as we decided to go on the spot. I wore this mermaid-style dress I got tailored in Ecuador and it was the perfect contrast with the vines and a fantastic day of wine tasting in Marlborough.
Our second spot of the day was Allan Scott Wines and Estate. We started at the Allan Scott Bistro with a charcuterie plate and a Sauvignon Blanc. You can also get a tasting at their cellar. Their outdoor patio was beautiful with a nice garden, a giant chess board and on the front lawn you also found comfy chairs where you could lounge, get a glass of wine and enjoy a sunny summery afternoon.
Our third stop of the day was Framingham Wines where we did a tasting and tried, a Sauvignon Blanc, a Blend (didn’t love this one), a Riesling (still a bit sweet for me), a rose and a Pinot Noir. The rose and Sauvignon Blanc were the best ones. This is very casual so you can swing by and try the wines. There’s no food, not even coffee on the property, so better to grab lunch beforehand.
