Visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata, New Zealand in the north island was as magical as you can imagine and more! Everything was perfectly curated. The tour lasted 2.5 hours and it’s a great daytime activity if you’re in the area. We drove from Wellington to Matamata for about 6 hours, did the tour and then spend the next couple of days in Rotorua where we did river rafting, hot pools and visited the Te Pui, amongst others.
Now on to the important question, what to wear to Hobbiton in summer. Keep in mind that December through April is summer so wear something comfortable. A summer dress, shorts are your best bet. Costumes are allowed and many families were dressed to the nine! You can buy elf ears at the store if you want something fun. They do have big umbrellas to protect you from the strong sun as there are no shades at The Shire. Try to go late afternoon to get a nicer cooler breeze. And don’t forget your sunblock.
I wore a simple white cropped top so I wouldn’t feel sticky, and the air could flow easily. Shorts were the perfect choice so you can sit comfortably in the tiny chairs, sit on the ground and just be comfortable throughout the 2.5 hours. You get a beer at the Green Dragon, complimentary. You can also get a cider or something non-alcoholic. There are pastries and the long hall where you can sit and rest as you approach the end of the tour. A straw hat came in handy so I could protect my skin and not have to use an umbrella. People were using them but they were big and some kept bumping into people so just be mindful of others.
