AUGUST WEATHER: August in Madrid is a whirlwind. Beginning to mid-August is warm but bearable, my birthday was on August second, and I was able to enjoy a wonderful dinner al fresco. Mid to end of August is another story. We were planning to go to Scandinavia then but due to prior commitments we had to delay our trip. Not to worry, I found a great getaway you can do from Madrid in August. A weekend trip from Madrid to Salamanca is the way to go. Yes, you can do it in a day but if you prefer to break things down, here’s what we did. We rented a car in Madrid, left early in the morning, and drove towards Salamanca. We stopped in Avila, to see it while it was cool and not crowded. Then we went to the wonderful Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Organic Farm, just 10-minutes from Salamanca.
Highly recommend this place, they have great customer service, quaint architecture, actual breakfast and to top it off, the hotel used to be a monastery. We got there in the afternoon, chilled by the pool, got complimentary wine, and cooled off from the heat. After taking a shower and resting, we did a wine tasting indoors while it was warm outside and toured the property, which used to be a monastery. In the early evening, we went to Salamanca to walk around and see the city. It’s a college town so staying at the Hacienda over Salamanca was a great call. The next day, we went to Segovia and checked off these nearby cities from our list. All and all, if you want to escape the city heat in August, a weekend trip from Madrid to Salamanca may be something you want to consider.
Weekend Trip from Madrid to Salamanca Itinerary:
Time: 2 days, 1 night.
Transportation: Rent a car for two days. Plenty of street parking and lots.
Where to go:
Day 1
Morning: Visit Avila and grab breakfast.
Afternoon: Head to a hotel with a pool in the outskirts of Salamanca, Zorita Wine Hotel and Organic Farm was the cutest for us.
Evening: Visit Salamanca and have dinner there.
Day 2
Morning: Enjoy breakfast, as it’s in the mountains, the weather is much cooler than in Madrid in the morning.
Afternoon: Arrive in Segovia, grab lunch and visit all the sights.
Early evening: Drive back to Madrid.
SUNCARE: I used to chase the sun a decade ago, tan with beer, baby oil, you name it. Now, I make sure I wear good SPF and protect my skin, and also because I get too hot after being in the sun for a while. SUMMER STYLER FOR A WEEKEND TRIP FROM MADRID TO SALAMANCA: A good tunic is essential during the summer especially when you’re going to the beach or are planning to be all day by the pool. This ZARA tunic is great, light and looks very polished on. It’s loose so I can breathe and sweat without having clothes sticking to my body.
Sunscreen stains are not an issue, I washed it on delicate on the washing machine, in a laundry bag and it looks brand new. My favorite sunscreens are from Supergoop! Sometimes items will say dry clean only but depending on the material you can get away with machine hand wash/delicate cycle. When in doubt, research it or ask.Another tunic I purchased recently is this Solid & Striped Oxford eyelet tunic. It’s high quality, you can wear it from the beach to lunch to the boat and back.
A perfect pair to every tunic is a good straw hat, I have many, this one I bought last year in Ibiza but I’ve linked similar ones I have recently added to my closet such as this Freya one.
Location: Hacienda Zorita Hotel & Spa was a wonderful place to get away from Madrid for the weekend, enjoy their “pool” or alberca as they call it, sip wine surrounded by beautiful trees and relax. They offer wine tastings, tour of the property, which used to be a monastery, their breakfast is actually good and their staff is very friendly.
