The spirit of Lake Como lives through century old gardens of breathtaking villas like Villa d’Este. Villa d’Este in the quaint lakeside village of Cernobbio is everything you dream of and more. You can feel the villa’s timeless elegance and history as you drive through it. It’s not hard to picture how aristocracy used to spend their time here for centuries.

After all, Italy is known for life well lived and that’s exactly what we were after on this short but wonderful holiday. From the staff at the gate, to the ones at the Veranda, everyone greets you with a smile and wearing their finest suits. Note that you can only explore the villa if you’re either staying in the property, which I hope we get to do in a few years, or if you have a reservation at one of their restaurants.

Given that we went in October, the Veranda was the only restaurant opened for lunch, lucky us, because it was the place we wanted to go. It’s the villa’s most elegant dining room, located at the Cardinal building. The elegant room with its retractable glass windows is covered with white crips white tablecloths, crystal glasses and fresh hydrangeas alongside the room, which we happened to see how the entire installation happened during the morning hours.

You have the best views in the house, you can see the lake front and center and the magnificent gardens to the left. You can also enjoy coffee or a cocktail at the Canova Bar and lake terrace. One spot is even more majestic than the others. The dress code is elegant, but you don’t need a jacket at lunch but if you go for dinner, keep in mind you’ll need a jacket. The entire experience was literally a fairy tale come truth! Now let’s talk about the outfit, the one I specifically bought in hopes we can make it here this year! A romantic flower dress for a romantic adventure.

I love a good frock maxi dress, specially, when it comes with self-tie straps at shoulders. It’s perfect for spring, summer and even fall days down south when summer is still there. When it comes to what to wear to Villa d’Este, I recommend something romantic and classic to go along with the property’s vibe. If you have always being enamored with Zimmermann dress, try these ones, they are just as cute, they are cotton and can be machine or hand wash and they are 1/10 of the price! Trust me, it’s a great deal. I didn’t believe it until I placed the order and tried them on. I got two because why not.

I wore it with sandals and an oversized sweater coat for the morning. Here’s a little tip if you want to enjoy the property all to yourself and have a lunch reservation. Head to Villa d’Este around eleven for an almost empty villa, get your best shots without people in the background and then when lunch time comes along, you can just sit back and enjoy a decadent meal without rushing.
