A summer in Bordeaux, we drove to Margaux on our way to Pauillac. Driving in the Southwestern part of France was fun! Bordeaux was beautiful but Margaux was where we began our wine tasting journey in the French countryside. We didn’t have time to go to Arcachon and we were told it was very touristy and crowded but we wanted to see the fisherman’s huts or carrelets so we found these huts on the Gironde Estuary in Saint Estephe, near Bordeaux. Here are some photos for you to glance over.
If you care to see the carrelets when you’re in the area. You can simply search for carrelets or fishing huts or fisherman’s huts and you can find nearby carrelets. Note that they are very simple. They are private property, and you cannot go inside. Personally, I found them very quaint, so I wanted to see them up close without getting to out of our way from chateau hunting and wine tasting. The carrelets are square fishing nets suspended above the water. In some areas you can see many one after the other. We were able to glance at fishermen fishing live and it was cute. The carrelets are part of France’s landscape and maritime heritage.
Now, let’s go back to discuss the main purpose of our trip. Seeing the chateaus, absorbing history and sipping wine. Naturally, we tasted many Bordeaux wines as we were in the Bordeaux region. Keep in mind that most chateaus do offer some white wines and some even have rose wines, which for me was a nice surprise as I liked to have a glass of rose at lunch to break out all the reds from the tastings. While starting out journey in Margaux, we visited the Pereire’s exquisite château, @chateaupalmer, located at Rte d’Issan, 33460 Margaux-Cantenac, France.
Next, we wanted to have an al fresco lunch so we book a table at @aumarquisdeterme_gcoutanceau. The indoor restaurant was also very lovely for a nice fall day, but we wanted to be outside and enjoyed our lunch overlooking the vines. You can pick from several lunch prix fixe menus or order a la carte. This is located at Marquis de Terme, 3 Rte de Rauzan, 33460 Margaux.
Here’s a quick snapshot of our dessert course. Everyone in your party does not need to order the same prix fixe menu. Rolf ordered the starter, main and dessert and I only got the starter and main as I’m not big on dessert and the dessert was plenty for the both of us, plus we didn’t want to be too full as we were tasting our way through Margaux. @winebarmargaux is casual wine bar in Margaux, perfect for a quick bite or a glass of rose in between Bordeaux wine tastings or if you just want to relax in a non-chateau venue. Located at 12 bis rue Georges Mandel, Margaux 33460. We also went to @chateaumargaux.
@chateau_malescasse was constructed in the early 1800s, in the classical médocain style, on a vineyard belonging to the last Lord of Lamarque. Stunning property, they hosted #afterworkenmedoc earlier this month. We had a lovely tasting in the tasting room, which was very elegant, and Charlotte recommended us to go to Soulac sur mer up north for a beach day. We always talk to locals to get recommendations of the non-touristy areas. This is located at 6 Chem. du Moulin Rose, 33460 Lamarque, France.
As we continued our journey, we stopped by the @chateaumalescot, located at 16 Rue Georges Mandel, 33460 Margaux-Cantenac, France. So many beautiful chateaus everywhere we drove. You can’t go wrong.
